12 Essential Oils For Pain Relief


Essential oils to help ease aches and pains!

1 - Peppermint
Peppermint essential oil has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. A 1994 study showed that peppermint essential oil was effective at blocking channels that transmit pain signals. It is regarded as one of the best essential oils for pain relief. It can be used for joint pain, arthritis, muscular pain and headaches. A Kiel University study found that 10% of the peppermint oil in ethanol had the same result as taking a 1000 mg dose of paracetamol!  SHOP >

2 - Ginger

Ginger essential oil helps with arthritis or muscle aches or pains. It's often commonly used in arthritis preparations due to it's anti-inflammatory and anesthetic propertiesSHOP >

3 - Wintergreen
Wintergreen Essential Oil contains 85-99% of methyl salicylate, which is the same component of aspirin. Wintergreen was considered one of the best essential oils for pain before synthetics were made in the early 1920s. The Native Americans used them to combat pain since before we were keeping any records. Wintergreen is one of the few plants in the world that naturally contain methyl salicylate. It is documented that these oils have cortisone-like effects that can relieve pain quickly.  SHOP >
 
4 - Clove Bud

Clove bud is commonly known for it's use with dental problems, such as tooth ache and sore gums. Clove oil is even approved as a dental anesthetic by the Dental Association. It is also warming and analgesic for muscular and joint pain.  SHOP > 

5 - Chamomile
Both Roman and German Chamomile are noted for their use in pain relief. German Chamomile is useful for the pain of cystitis, headaches, teething pain, ear ache and colic. It's anti-inflammatory properties make it good for muscular aches. Roman Chamomile is very rich in esters, it is very useful for calming tension headaches.  SHOP >
 
6 - Spruce

Spruce essential oil is very good for arthritis, rheumatic, sciatica and lower back pain. It is wonderful for muscular aches and pains. It also has a long history of use in the sauna, steam bath, and as an additive to baths or massage oils used after strenuous exercise.  SHOP >

Rosemary
There are some differences in the chemotypes of each different Rosemary oil. Rosemary CT1 (Camphor) is best for muscular and joint aches and pains. It is commonly used in arthritis preparations and blends well with peppermint and ginger. It is strongly camphorous in aroma, but for some uses, is the best choice due to its pain relieving therapeutic actions.  SHOP >

8 -Black Pepper
Black Pepper is considered a hot oil and can help with circulation, rheumatoid arthritis, soothe muscular aches and pains, or to aid in the healing of bruises. It is wonderfully relaxing when used in post-exercise massage due to its warming effect and promotion of circulation.  SHOP >

Helichrysum
Helichrysum is also known as everlasting. It is an anti-inflammatory oil, that is useful for muscular pain and temporary pain relief in arthritis and rheumatism. French practitioners have noted the wound healing, scar-reducing and anti-coagulant benefits (as for sprains and bruises) of Everlasting oil. If you have a sports injury Helichrysum oil is great for hematomas, sprains and twisted ankles, especially when there is swelling and bruising. Combine with wintergreen and peppermint essential oils for a great pain relieving blend.

Lemongrass
Lemongrass has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It aids in headaches, swelling, arthritis and muscular pain. After exercising, is very helpful in promoting the relief of build up of lactic acid in the muscles that can cause cramping. Those who have had connective tissues injuries can be thankful to have lemongrass oil. It is great at repairing torn ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Lemongrass acts similar to the sedative opiate drugs that are derived from opium to act on the brain without affecting your central nervous system. Lemongrass oil depresses the higher, cerebral cortex, part of your brain (and its cough center) so that the pain sensations don’t get registered.  SHOP >

11 - Basil
Basil is best known for its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. Useful for relief of headaches, muscular pain, cramps and spasm. Ocimum basilcum CT methyl chavicol contains strong antispasmodic properties. Ocimum basilcum CT eugenol is an anti-inflammatory and used for pain topically. It is relaxing when used in post-exercise massage. Basil can also be used diluted to help ease ear aches, sore throats and coughing by applying topically to the general area or using in a gargle.  SHOP >

12 - Nutmeg
Nutmeg has shown to be a potent natural anti-inflammatory and analgesic. It can be used for arthritis, rheumatic pain, muscle aches and nerve pain and is great when used in massage blends. It is a warming oil so dilution is recommended. Like clove oil, can be applied as an emergency treatment to dull toothache by using one or two drops on a cotton swab, and apply to the gums around an aching tooth until dental treatment can be obtained.  SHOP >
